Cornered is a video installation by Raquel Salvatella de Prada, that extends the In Transit exhibition to the Rubinstein Arts Center. It represents the motivation and struggles of African immigrants leaving their home country and making an attempt—most often failed—to cross the border from Morocco to the Spanish cities of Melilla and Ceuta, the only European cities on Africa’s mainland. The installation consists of video projections on a stylized wooden structure that is reminiscent of a Moroccan table. Walking around the structure, viewers experience atmospheric imagery that captures the contrast between frustration and hope. Salvatella de Prada partnered with musician Jonathan Henderson to develop a musical score that synthesizes the migrants’ diverse musical cultures.
